[The Life of Shaun #154] My Family

Here is a picture of my family from my sister Lisa's wedding in Myknos.

From left to right: Lara, Mom, Lisa, Dad, me, and in the honourary position upfront, my nephew, Emilio.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #152] London bits

Just took these pics off my camera, some random shots from the last couple weeks:

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AZOXLJwzcNmLro&notag=1
  1. DSC00051 - my group- and classmate Marca demonstrating how people in her home state of Iowa show support for their team
  2. DSC00052 - at the bar where Alexi and I had some drinks after going to Eel Pie Island; despite what you may think, I took this pic to get the oxymoronic sign on the wall
  3. DSC00053 - the lovely little neighbourhood square pond & green of Barnes
  4. DSC00054 - just a nice view looking down my street - my buildings the red one one the left; if you look toward the right, the building that looks white with about six rows of black, square windows, that building is on Coley Street
  5. DSC00057 - a cool "building" I came across in Shoreditch on Wednesday; I learned today in Time Out's "Look up!" edition that those old tube cars have been converted into inexpensive office space
  6. DSC00061 - the ad for the Simpsons movie on the London IMAX theatre near Waterloo.  Those who've seen the movie will understand why this is such an apt advertisement!
  7. DSC00062 & DSC00063 - self explanatory!

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #150] Checked out

I turned in my locker key at Cass today.  Felt a bit odd "checking out".  I haven't been in that building in weeks and that could be the last time I am there for months.  Reality is coming...

(I need a drink!)

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #149] Eel Pie Island

I enjoy exploring random parts of the city; I don't do it as much as I'd like, but I do get to some places.  My friend Alexi and I realised recently that we share this pleasure and so we set out to Eel Pie Island (an ait [or eyot], actually, we've learned), a little island I happened across when I was pouring over the London AtoZ, as I often do.  The island's also mentioned in an AbFab episode, so that sealed the deal.

Well, according to Wikipedia, "An ait (or eyot) is a small island found in the middle of a river or lake. It is especially used to refer to islands found on the River Thames in England."  Small is certainly key.  It took about five minutes to walk its length, and that was at a leisurely pace and taking pictures.  It was so small, we did it twice to make sure we didn't overlook some side path or something.  Nope!  That was it.

But it was quite charming and cute, and was a good jaunt.  You can see pics of tour day out to he little island and Barnes here, if you'd like:

http://share.shutterfly.com/action/welcome?sid=0AZOXLJwzcNmLpg&notag=1

BTW, Eel Pie Island (Isn't that a great name?  They have the best names here!) was mentioned in AbFab because a lot of the free-loving type artists of the 60s used to perform at a hotel there until it burnt down.  The hotel's now a concrete 70s housing complex - not ugly for a 70s building, but certainly not charming in any way.

Anyway, after our 15 minutes on the island we escaped up to Barnes for lunch; rugby was on at the stadium, which is right by Eel Pie Island, so we had no desire to be in that area.

A very nice day out, which was capped by the champagne and vodka of lore from my previous update.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #148] Two

This won't be creative or inspiring.  Today is my second anniversary of arriving in London.  I'd love to say something profound and insightful, but all I can think of is that some day (not today, obviously) I will learn that vodka and champagne don't mix.

What I can say is that it's been a great two years and I am very excited about the year ahead.  I promise to have something more interesting to say on my third anniversary.

Cheers,
Shaun
