[The Life of Shaun #161] Money money money!

I got PAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID today!  Yahoo!!!  My first (real) paycheque in over a year (London Citizen's pittance doesn't count).  Wow, does it feel nice to have an income again instead of just an outflow.

The cheeky bastards, though - even though I was there for all the working days of September, since I didn't start on 01 September (I started on the 3rd) I got a prorated amount - rather than getting paid my salary/12 I got my salary/261*20.  (Yes, we only get paid once a month in the UK - very hard to get used to budgeting that way.)

Still, I am back in the professional world.  <sigh of relief>  I hope they don't fire me now...

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #160] A fix and pics

As most of you know I have been to nine universities now; in order they are  La Sorbonne, University of Nevada Las Vegas, City College of San Francisco, University of Alaska Fairbanks, University of North Dakota, Albertus Magnus College, Stevens Institute of Technology, Baruch College City University of New York and Cass Business School City University London.  Obviously I have an addiction to places of higher learning.  My mentor group from Cass can tell you I can also be a bit pedantic and OCD with things like punctuation and making sure my monthly tube pass starts on the first day of the month.

To address both these things, I've enrolled in another institution, Morley College (near Waterloo), beginning on Tuesday - this way I can get my fix and round off the list to a neat ten institutions.  I will be taking German on Tuesdays and Mandarin on Thursdays.

I am totally excited to take German!  I had it in high school and absolutely loved it - it's such a fun language.  It's going to be a fun thing for me to do weekly.  Mandarin - well, I am taking that more because of the impression China made on me in June - it's definitely where the action is going to be.  I'd considered Russian, as it's a growing BRIC country, too, but I think China will dominate even over oil-rich London in the business world.

My friend from Cass, Lottie, is taking Mandarin with me, which will be nice.  She's also doing a second language, but French.  But our one class a week together will be a nice help to the transition into the real world.

Lastly, below are more pics from my sister's wedding for those friends & family that know her and may want to see.

Cheers,
Shaun

Hi friends and family.  Here are the pictures of our wedding.  There are a lot of them but there are so many nice ones I couldn't select just a few.  This is from Walgreens in the states, so anyone in the states can order hard copies right on line.  It's great.  You just have to register your name and e mail to see the photos.  It only takes 30 seconds.  Thanks again to all of you making this one of the most magical days of my life.!!!!! If anyone would like a hard copy of any pics outside of the states, just let me know!

[The Life of Shaun #159] Studio Sixty on the Sunset Strip

Does anyone know why this show was not renewed in America? I love it! It's one of the smartest shows I've seen come from network TV in a long time. My hunch is it's the critical look it takes with conservatives; that or middle America was too busy watching reruns of Everybody Hates Raymond to try something new and a bit challenging.

Decidedly unchuffed with Nielson right now...

[The Life of Shaun #157] M(anchester)BA!

OK, I am just this far --> || <-- from being an MBA now!

I had a talk with my adviser for my B(S)RP yesterday and he told me he really enjoyed reading it, and then described some things I could do if I wanted to raise my grade.  He also said it was a "clear pass" as is and I told him I was quite comfortable with that.  So - I am *DONE*!  YAHOOEY!

But rats, now I have to work.  I wanna go back to school!  Hehehe.

I won't get an official certificate of any kind until November at the soonest, and graduation isn't until March 2008, but, for all tautological intents & purposes, I am now Shaun Coley, MBA.

It was quite a nice moment in a day of a long hangover.  I went with my friends Alexi and Alistair to Manchester over the weekend (Russ has postponed his trip across the ocean until April, so no Cologne this coming weekend) and, as always, had a blast.  I love that little city.  There really is nothing stellar about the place, but the people are super friendly, cute and as unpretentious as can be; everyone is just out for a good time and I always manage to have one.

I am a bit apprehensive about my little town, though.  They're building a luxury apartment building and boutique hotel right on the canal and I have a terrible fear one of the last great gay villages is soon to become an oh-so-precious gift shop and baby stroller derby.  I hope it doesn't happen, but you know what these family-sized only apartments did to other dank neighbourhoods we saved, the Village and Chelsea, Castro's on its way out - The Gays don't buy three-bedroom apartments, people with lots and lots of babies do.

But it should be OK still when I visit again in April - I'm already looking forward to the return.

Cheers,
Shaun Coley, MBA

[The Life of Shaun #156] First day

My first day at XYZ was good. Started off the day with an orientation, about 90 minutes, then it took about 30 minutes to get my ID and then I was on my way off to my building! Quite a change from the two-week orientation in a hotel in Stamford, CT IBM gave me when I started there, but no matter.

Took a bit to actually get into my building as there was a fire drill and they weren't letting people up the tower (I am in the Lehman Brothers building until about December while the refurbish where we are in 25 Cabot Square). They took me to lunch, had a little info session on IntelligentApps, which, being a Microsoft product, I have every confidence will be anything but intelligent.

The team is nice, though the guy who originally hired me is no longer there, which is too bad. I think the role is going to be a little more techy and pedantic than I'd thought, but it's really going to expose me to how this whole part of the business works, which is what I want out of it, so I am good with that.

Attached are a few pics from day one:

  1. DSC00053: The building I am working in now (tall one), 25 Bank Street, on the 17th floor
  2. DSC00054: Building where I will work, 25 Cabot Square
  3. DSC00055: View of The City from our office on Bank Street
Very happy to be encased in the pillars of global capital and out of the commune - here's to day two!

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #155] One day more

Today's the last day of my attempt to extend adolescence into my thirties - I did well, 32 and a student! But that's coming to a close - I start work tomorrow, which I am actually really excited about. It's going to be such a refreshing change being in a professional office after the hippie commune I spent the Summer in. And, of course, the paycheques won't hurt so much either.

This being Europe it looks like we're going to have a transport strike my first week (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6974841.stm). At least it doesn't start until tomorrow evening, so I won't be late to my first day of work - just every other day this week. A strike seems rather rich given their 45 holidays a year and the service level they provide (attached is a picture of the tube status this afternoon). I think that Greater London needs to brace itself for some pain and get in a ballsy mayor/PM to break the transport unions à la Thatcher and the miners. This will mean three buses for me each way, but it's worth it if it'll break the stranglehold. And maybe the New Tube that resulted could get in real workers that will keep it open 24 hours like in New York rather than these delicate princess-muffin-cakes they have now that can't bear irregular shifts.

Regardless, I will get through the week and get this whole new career/life/challenge/excitement/chapter thing started. My friend Russ arrives Friday and we're off to Manchester for the weekend (woo hoo!), and next weekend I will be heading to Cologne (woo hoo again!), so a great start to September for me.

Hope you're all well and living somewhere that doesn't have pussycharm transport workers!

Cheers,
Shaun
