[The Life of Shaun #174] Hallo von Berlin!

Hallo alles!

I've found myself in Berlin at the end of November again - one of these days I'll learn!

I forgot my gloves, so went straight to the lovely Alexanderplatz and got some there, then walked down √únter den Linden and cried over the demise of the Palast der Republik.

But the city's still wonderful and I have a feeling I am gonna get drunk tonight!

xo,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #173] A Hall and the Wall

Just a quick note as I have to pack, change, dash off to meet Mary Keany for a play, have a drink all before midnight - phew!

As it was one of my birthdays this week and I've just started a new job, I decided to buy myself as birthday a trip to Berlin for the weekend, where I've been wanting to return to since the minute the plane took off to bring me away in November 2003. Berlin is a fantastic, eclectic, edgy and, most of all, sexy city and I have been away too long. This is the first time I am taking a trip entirely alone and I am quite looking forward to the experience. Anyway, invest in stock in German breweries before tomorrow for a quick profit.

Attached are a few pics from a concert I went to last night. My friend, Alexi, got tickets through his work and took me and a second friend. It was a trio who performed Beethoven, Mendelssohn and a contemporary piece, all of which had their moments. But the best thing was the setting, the Goldsmiths Hall - absolutely gaudy and gorgeous. I really need to get to more events like that.

OK, my suitcase is calling! Have a great weekend everyone.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #171] DVD recommendation: Alistair Cooke's America

I just finished the last episode of Alistair Cooke's America and am recommending it to all of my American friends and friends who have an interest, either negative or positive, in American history and what this "America" is.

I found it so interesting because it was made by a British-born long-term resident in America, so it was unusual to see his perspective versus the one we were all taught in school - to see someone who can analytically separate the good and the bad of America and its past, rather than the "We're number one!" we all were thumped with from the age of five.

The second thing that makes it so captivating is that it was made in the 70s, a whole different political and social lifetime ago. As the series gets closer and closer to "modern" times, this becomes a bigger factor, and it really is fascinating peek at a different perspective in time, and especially, to me, on such things as America's role in the world going forward (as in now) and what to do about the "black problem".

So add it to your NetFlix/LoveFilm/Amazon queues (I know I don't have to say Wal-Mart or Blockbuster queues since, of course, none of you enlightened folks would have them) and give it a whirl. And let me know what you think.

BTW, for those who are curious:

"Dear all,
Your transcripts will be available from the MBA Course office tomorrow (Wednesday) after 1.00pm.
Regards,
Jas"

Grr... Perhaps one day I will know just what I got!

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #170] Grrr....

Stupid British bureaucracy!  They did the assessments today but they are going to eMail our City University accounts tomorrow, so I won't know till tomorrow night, after German, if I passed.

Cheers,
Shaun Coley, MB....A?

[The Life of Shaun #169] This week in London

So another birthday's come and gone in the middle of a whirlwind week here in London. The adventures started last weekend when my friend David Bell came to visit from New York. Very exciting as excluding Manhattan and San Francisco it was his first time outside America. It was really great to see him here. He's not a great traveller, so him committing to six+ hours in a plane is no small testament to our friendship. I really loved showing him where I live, play and work, and what attracted me to move here, just showing him my life here. He gave London high marks and I think I may be able to get him to Berlin in 2008. But it was really sad to see him go and I had the mini-depression I always have when I see my friends from the States and realise how much I miss them in my life.

Fortunately a good chunk of my London friends scooped me out of that funk when we all met for my birthday dinner on Wednesday at The Bowler, a gastropubesque restaurant in my neighbourhood that really is quite special. Great mix of people and a good night to remind me that wherever I am there are people I will miss.

Friday night was the first Cass Alumni Ball, a black tie dinner held in the Main Hall of the Natural Histroy Museum (in the third pic attached, our table was just next to the dinosaur's rear right leg). A stunning venue and a totally great time, or at least I assume so as my memory past the champagne reception is quite fuzzy, but my headache the next day told me I had a blast.

Sunday was at Natasha's, Chris's and Lottie's for XFactor and the painful crime of seeing Hope go on another week. Today, a bit of trepidation as I realise that tomorrow our final marks are due out from Cass and will know if I am indeed an MBA. So send good thoughts and vibes my way tomorrow!

That's it from my island. Sorry I am not great at one-on-one eMailing as of late - just very busy, especially when I can't check mail at work, and I hope these occasional updates keep you in tune with me and my life. Hope all's well with you where you are.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #168] Miami & New York, Feb 2008

Hey all,

I just booked a trip to Miami and New York in February.  I know it's a bit early, but I wanted to tell you all the dates so those who will be in the areas will hopefully stay there so I can see you while I am across the pond.  So the dates:

Miami: 17 - 21 Feb
NYC: 22 Feb - 02 Mar

which of course means brunch at Lips on 02 March - woo woo!

See you soon!

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #167] The reality of London

There's a sign in the window of the letting agency by work that has a proud sign:

Who needs to be a millionaire?
60% of our flats rent for £500 per week or less!

That is $1,050/week in American today, or £2,166 ($4,550) per month.  That, of course, means that 40% rent for more than £2,166/$4,550 per month.

Who needs to be a millionaire indeed.

Cheers,
Shaun
