[The Life of Shaun #234] Barack & home

Well, it looks like Barack is about to take the nomination; I am comfortable with my metaphorical £975,000.  He's a great figure and I think he will do a lot to "heal America" (and the world?), as CNN likes to sum it up.  And I think if he surrounds himself with a smart, capable team, he will do well quickly.

For my Barack-supporting friends who wonder why I've been so reticent to get on the bandwagon, this is why:

Just watch the first 2:20 - and then please tell me they've decided to not let the states between the Hudson and San Francisco Bay vote any more.  <sigh>  I am bracing for a McCain presidency, especially now that gay marriage has popped up in popular discussion again, but I'll be switching my direct debit from the Hillary campaign to Barack's the minute she concedes.  But until that moment, I'll hope...

I've got internet and even a dresser now!  I am a side table, desk chair and handyman away from being moved in.  Which reminds me, I've got to get to the DIY before it closes.  Hope you are all well and I'd love to hear from you after this ridiculous absence.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #232] Israel here we come!

Woo woo!  I am very excited!  I just bought my ticket to Israel!  I am going with Mary Keany from the night of 18 Sep - 28 Sep.  Really seems quite crazy as Israel was off my radar of somewhere I'd go any time soon.  It feels very unknown in the way China did before I went.

Yes, there are political issues and stances I don't necessarily want to support with my tourist dollars, but if I were limiting travel based on that I wouldn't be going to America in December either.  Actually, pretty much I'd probably go to Scandinavia.  And that's about it.

Shalom,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #231] Sublet in New York (well, almost)

Hi all,

I just wanted to pass this along.  My friend Rachel is coming to Europe for a month in July and is looking to sublet her place while she's here.  It's a large space in Hoboken, near the PATH, and comes complete with two wonderful cat friends.  So if you know anyone who needs/wants a place in July, her info's below.

Not much to report on from London - still no internet at home, though BT is supposed to install my line tomorrow.  Then only 10-15 days after that for broadband.  <sigh>  I had some friends over to my place Saturday, which was really great.  I am loving my flat, which is a good thing as my first mortgage payment is just a week away.

Cheers,
Shaun

Subject: Sublet

Schnooks.. would you mind putting this out "there" for me?  I'm looking for a sublet for the month of July, 01 July to 01 August to be precise.  The rent is $1100 (all inclusive -- utilities, no cable).  Apartment is 1 bdrm, 1 bath.  Fully furnished, and coming with two cats who will need to be taken care of as well.  Neighborhood is Hoboken, 10 minute walk to PATH train into NYC, and 50 paces from the bus to Port Authority.  Next door to a mellow restaurant/bar, nice street, quiet neighbors.

Let me know what you think.. I really want to try to sublet as opposed to pay that rent, too.  Also, I would hate to have the cats at my place for 5 weeks with cat sitters checking in every other day. :(  That would make me (and them) sad.

[The Life of Shaun #229] Fine white wine

I got appliances today!  I can finally wash my underwear, never have to do dishes again, and most importantly have a place to chill white wine and champagne!  The new flatmate wants to put food in the wine chiller - I guess that's an Aussie thing.

My BT appointment has been moved up from the 20th to the 14th, so I might be connected again sooner than originally expected.  But, this being London, my faith is minimal.

It's hot as @$$crack today and it's only May; I am not optimistic about the Summer.  Suddenly all those windows that were so great because they let in light when I viewed the flat in the Winter are much less appreciated as sun magnifiers.  I have no balcony chairs yet, but looks like now's the time to get on that.

All in all, everything's going well.  My flat is starting to feel like home, the flatmate's nice and cheerful, and my gritty neighbourhood is growing on me.  I found a pub around the corner with a beer garden - that helped.  Lottie, when shall we try it?!

Attached are two pics:

1) Chris, Natasha, me and Rei when he came to visit last month
2) My fridge

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #228] TVs and Mattresses

I have TVs and mattresses now!  The flat is slowly filling up.  Tomorrow it should fill more with the addition of a flatmate.  Moving in to Kelday Heights will be Court (short for Courtney), a 25-year old recent arrival from Sydney.  I interviewed about 10-12 people, several of whom were livable and a few of whom were comfortable, but Court seemed the best fit and also was very excited about the flat, and that's good as I want someone who really wants to live there.

Mattresses came today, so I have a real double bed to sleep on tonight; after 2.5+ years in a single bed, this will be luxury.  I splashed out on the mattress as well, figuring I deserve it after my self sacrifice.  TVs also came this week so I can catch up on the gossip in Weatherfield.

BT is phenomenally annoying; I won't have a landline until 20 May, and then not internet until some time thereafter.  Fortunately, having moved in (actually, to) this country before, I had patience at the ready.  I am currently in a £1/hour internet café in Soho - you can imagine how nice that is.  My computer has a 12" CRT screen - it's 1996 in here!

Mary Keany lives a 10-minute stroll from me, and it's quite nice having a good friend so near.  I miss my shops on Exmouth Market, but am enjoying the raw urbanity of my new location.  I'll be watching for closing stores to suggest to Starbucks they open a branch to kick start the regeneration of Watney Market.

All in all, things are well - at least until Tuesday when Boris brings the onset of the descent of London (He wants to remove the more efficient bendy buses so our trip times can be 20% longer, make it more cost-effective for SUVs to drive in central London to clog our streets and dirty our air, and ban alcohol on the tube!  I hate him!).  Hopefully the GLC will temper his meddling hand somewhat, but I am not convinced that the preeminent city in the world should be led by such a card - at any time, let alone the run-up to a £12 billion event - and am quite shocked he believes Londoners should have to endure our creaking transport infrastructure without libations to ease the pain.

How about the Fritzl case?  That is one of the craziest and most effecting stories I have heard in a long while.  Really quite stunning.

OK, back East I go; a shower and a night in Stoke Newginton await me.

Cheers,
Shaun
