[The Life of Shaun #243] H20

We have water!  Finally, something to mix the vodka with again.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #242] Aquaman not welcome here

I knew there would come a day when I would have to walk up or down the stairs to/from the eight floor (ninth in American) because the power had gone out. And that day came yesterday. And has continued into today for good measure. What I didn't realise, though, was that the lack of power would also mean no water. That whole gravity thing didn't occur to me until the taps ran dry.

Not exactly sure what happened; we have power to our individual flats, but the common areas are dark and the lifts are down, as is the building's water pump (hence no water). There was some disagreement or misunderstanding with EDF, the building's supplier, and the management agency. I've tried to call and get information, but the problem's spread in the typical British fashion over four different agents - EDF Network (the power lines), EDF Power (the electrons for the wires), Galliford Try (the managers) and Toynbee (the housing association).

Trying to coerce the real story piecemeal out of them out of office hours is a Herculean task. The closest I can get is the bill was sent to the wrong address for Galliford Try so went unpaid. EDF Network then came and physically disconnected the building yesterday. Appropriate scuff was stirred by the residents, issue tracked down, and paid. EDF Network came and physically reconnected the circuit, but EDF Power has not let the electrons take the left turn at Shadwell DLR and into our building yet. Of course, Toynbee denies any non-payment of power but has no better story. Regardless, it's insane we could be without power and, more importantly, water for 36 hours. This is really bad, even by British standards.

I think I'll move here:

I hope you are all well watered and lit,

[The Life of Shaun #241] Homes

Two random things:

My friend has a room for rent in his apartment in Washington Heights, so sending the details on below.  I used to live in that building and all these years later (six now, yikes!) it still seems to be the best deal in Manhattan.  Mike forgot to mention there's a Taco Bell up there now, too.  And a Starbucks - it's practically North Chelsea!  So please pass on to recommendable potential flatmates or move in yourself, if you're keen!

Attached is a picture of my cousin's house (the white one on the right; <sigh> yes, I have family with a pick-up truck - I know, I know, but my cousin assures me they don't commute in it and it is only used for hauling trees to be planted to prevent the desertification of the central plains, honest!) from this past Saturday with a tornado headed towards it.  Fortunately, it veered North and missed the house.  Unfortunately it missed the truck too.  But I thought it was a cool picture.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #240] Sex & the City

I *LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVED* it.  Fantastic, so compelling and so great to see the girls again.  Worth every penny of the £15.50.  All you naysayers can just Poughkeepsie in your pants!

And my heart is aching for New York right now; I'd hop a plane there just for a decent cosmo and brunch with my friends if I could.  All my friends there, take an extra minute today for me to appreciate where you live.

Now back into the reality of London life - time to make lunch for tomorrow and crawl into bed with a Coronation Street or The Wire.  Another work week begins oh too soon.

Cheers with Big Apple stars in my eyes,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #239] Barack's campaign's a little better off today

As promised, I switched my donation from Hillary to Barack this morning.  Even though she hasn't conceded, it's inevitable and, more importantly, I think she should now.  It's time for her to very publicly support him for the hopes of November.

I always liked Barack, but I have to admit he scored a lot of points with me twice.  Once was on MLK King day when he said that black people need to recognise discrimination against gays as the same discrimination they face(d).  Then this weekend, as he officially left his church, he said he does not agree with the anti-gay message of many churches.  Bravo!  Not a Newsomesque embrace, to be sure, but I bet you'd have to dig pretty deeply into the minor parties before you'd find someone else on the cusp of the presidency who'd speak as positively about gay rights.

So count me in - Barack '08!

Now, who for the #2?  I'd be keen to know your thoughts.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #236] Sticker Shock and the City

OK, OK, I know I've sent plenty of eMails about how expensive London is.  But Mary Keany tells me I have gotten used to the prices here as she is offended far more frequently than I.  However, I just bought three tickets for Sex & the City this coming Sunday - the tickets were £15.50 ($30.50).  Each!  Plus a £2.10 ($4.15) booking fee.  I'm not wrong, this is a film, not a live production, right?

I suppose we didn't have to go to the Odeon Leicester Square, but really, do you go see Sex & the City in zone 2?  I think not.  I mean, proximity to the cocktail bars is non-negotiable.

Happy cosmos to all,
Shaun

(I can't wait!!!!)

[The Life of Shaun #235] Canary Wharf

Cool pic of Canary Wharf, where I work.  From the looks of it, it must've been taken this Spring.
