[The Life of Shaun #257] Three BBQs in three days

Rachel decided to come to London for the weekend rather than have a weekend trip in France, which was so nice - I was really happy to see her again. And London celebrated her coming by giving her a week of real Summer.

London took advantage of the break in Springautumn and BBQs abounded - we attended three in three days. Attached are a few of my fave pics from the weekend. You can check the rest out here if you'd like:

[The Life of Shaun #256] Jerkin' the Gherkin

My favourite thing about my flat is the view it affords me of my favourite London building, the Gherkin. This weekend, Rachel managed to catch me on camera showing the Gherkin just how much I love it.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #255] The Life of Benoît

This edition of The Life of Shaun has been preempted to bring you the following.  It's not every day a friend of mine gets a book published, so I thought I'd spread the word.

Cheers,
Shaun

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Benoît
Date: 2008/7/17
Subject: Update on my book, America Anonymous

Hi All,

I just wanted to give you an update on America Anonymous: Eight Addicts in
Search of a Life, my book about addiction in this country.

It will be published Jan. 6 by Simon & Schuster. That month, I
will be going on a ten-city book tour—Boston, New York City, San Francisco,
Seattle, Chicago, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Fort Lauderdale. If you
live in or near one of those cities, I hope you can make a reading. I should
know the schedule in the next couple of months and will be creating a web site,
americaanonymous.com, that will list the dates and times.

America Anonymous tells the story of eight men and women from around the country in
various stages of recovery. For neearly three years, I followed a crack-addicted
grandmother, a college student hooked on sex and pornography, a radio DJ in
recovery from food addiction, a bodybuilder psychologically dependent on
steroids, an alcoholic retiree, a former boxer addicted to heroin, a housewife who can't
stop shoplifting, and a gambling addiction counselor addicted to, in his own
words, "virtually everything."

I also tell the story of my recovery from sexual addiction and explore
addiction and recovery as a whole in this country. In the book's introduction, I
write, "While untreated addiction triggers and exacerbates many of our country's
most pressing problems, we seem uninterested in tackling it—or even talking
honestly, intelligently, or compassionately about it… But effectively combating
addiction would require more than a complete rethinking of our failed drug
policies. It would necessitate nothing short of a radical shift of
consciousness. As we find more and more ways to entertain ourselves—and as
obsessively search for new and innovative ways to escape the reality of the
present moment and make ourselves feel 'better'—we've created a schizophrenic
culture where nothing is ever enough, where stillness is equated with boredom, and where we need increasingly intense experiences just to feel alive."

If you would like to pre-order the book at a discount, it is now available on
amazon. http://www.amazon.com/America-Eight-Addicts-Search-Life/dp/0743277821/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1216312730&sr=1-1

Thank-you so much for all of your support.

Best,

[The Life of Shaun #254] Ah, Paris!

The modern, sharp edges of Canary Wharf seemed especially harsh yesterday. Paris was great; it's such a wonderful city to be in with friends. I'd felt a bit 'over' Paris, but it was a totally different vibe going there to reunite with friends. I am actually excited about going there again next month when Russ is in town. I am mentally preparing for those hangovers already.

I'm attaching a couple of my fave pics from the weekend - if you want to see them all, you can check them out here:

[The Life of Shaun #251] À bientôt

I'm off to Paris tomorrow; my friend Rachel has rented a flat in the 8th for the month, so taking advantage of the shacking-up rights and seeing a good friend who's rarely nearby enough to do so.  I am looking very forward to it, actually - it's a different feeling going there to visit someone.

So, have a good weekend everyone - I sense good wine, cheese and falafel in my future.

Bisous,
Shaun

And the results are in!  I am curious who JJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ is and wonder why The MK hasn't made note of her double billing.  ;-)

It was silly fun - thanks for taking it!

[The Life of Shaun #249] Weekend pics

Some pics from the weekend from Todd's collection, for those who're interested.  Not sure what I was trying to relay in the second pic at Lahore, but it seems to have been something very dazzling or about The Wizard of Oz.

The last pic shows the weather for Pride here - shocking!

Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #248] Beer lessons

Part of the celebration on the 4th of July was our beer tasting mini-course at the British Museum. Glad to see my tax pounds are going to support some art I can fully get behind!

Here's a pic of Schnookums and me getting cultured.

Cheers,
Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #247] Storm rolling in

Just took these pics out from my window - doesn't really do it justice, but it's really quite stunning.

Pride was great - off to South London with Todd for dinner with a friend - so not looking forward to work tomorrow - ugh!

Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #246] 4th recap and Pride

Apparently, in Mayfair one celebrates the 4th of July with mac 'n cheese, fries and cheesecake for £44 / $88.  It was lovely and a great time, but I think next year I'll throw a veggie dog on a BBQ (Lottie, volunteer to host?).

Happy Pride, everyone!

Shaun

[The Life of Shaun #245] Happy Fourth of July!

As most of you know, today is Independence Day (though no one calls it
that), the day Americans celebrate liberating themselves from a
tyrannical, oppressive regime that would eventually bring about
insufferable social standards such as the freedom to marry whom you
love, a true separation of church and state, a vigorous multi-party
system, an integrated world view, and worst of all health care for all
its people, regardless of ability to pay. Thank goodness we broke
free from that! God ble$$ America!

To help with the festivities, the British Museum is holding an
Americana fest with free American beer (I guess this means Coors or
Bud, eh?) and then I will be heading to an American (themed?) dinner
with visiting ex-pats Todd Martin and Schnookums, and resettled Ex-
Pats Mary Keany and Natasha (who is bringing along a token Limey for
us to tar and feather).

After that, it's out into the wild streets of Soho for pre-Pride
revelry (they are smart here - they do Pride on Saturday) where much
non-American beer will be had.

Perhaps Americans will vote themselves out of the current tyranny in
DC and we can truly celebrate next year. Remember to register to
vote!

Obama '08!

Cheers,
Shaun
