[The Life of Shaun #497] They Did

The UK has had civil partnerships - a modern version of "Separate, but Equal" - since just before I moved here.  But from today, we have equal marriage.  My friend Lou and his partner, Aarron, were one of the first couples to be legally joined in the new vernacular.  To some it might be nothing more than a semantic shift, but to everyone there today, it was certainly more.

Two moments really stood out:

At the ceremony, the Islington Council official got verklempt and had to pause before being able to continue the service.  She, and the others overseeing the ceremony, were genuinely and honestly happy to be part of this day.

At the afterpub, there was a wedding cake at one end of the room.  As God was smiling upon gay marriage, the weather was sunny and warm today, so the publican opened the doors and windows to the streets.  A mom, with her daughter of four or five, passed by, and stopped her daughter to point out the cake with two groomsmen on top.  From the body language and the smiles, you could see she was telling her daughter it was a good thing.  And indeed it was.

Congrats Lou and Aarron - and thank you for letting me be a part of it!
