British TV

I love Channel 4...

Mon: The Perfect Penis
Tue: Chopped Off: The Story of John Wayne Bobbit
Wed: The World's Biggest Penis
Thu: The Half Ton Man (sorry, I mean the Half Tonne Man)

And they are not afraid to show things here that would never, never fly on US TV. For instance, letting you see all the ins & outs of a penis enlargement surgery, which taught me that, GET THIS, the surgery is done under local anesthetic!!!

The Perfect Penis show also taught me that I am firmly against injecting silicone into my penis; I wasn't even aware this was something I needed to have an opinion about. I mean, who'd'a thunk it? But ya know, many guys have thunk it and after thunking about it a while thunked "Well, yes! That'd be swell!"

Now that's the kind of culture I'm all about! Can't wait to find out what's on next week... The World's Deepest Vagina? The Woman Who Lives in Her Bra? I Know I Am But What Are You: One Hermaphrodite's Personal Tale of Indecision?

God bless the UK! But hey, you all got the State of the Union address last night, so I guess everywhere has its perks.

Yes, it's true, we do have to pay £126.50 ($225) per year for the hono(u)r and privilege of having a television in our flat, but isn't that a small price to pay for countless hours of high-brow entertainment?

Brokeback Mountain

I know, I know, I am behind, but it's not totally my fault; "Brokeback Mountain" wasn't released here in the Third World until into January, so I couldn't see it when most of you did.  But I did finally see it last night and it was beautiful.  I fell asleep thinking about it and woke up thinking about it.  If, and this doesn't seem possible, you are even more of a pariah than I and haven't seen it yet, definitely make the effort to catch it in the cinema.  You don't want to miss out and Ang Lee needs the support. (Hey, I paid £11.50, $20.50, to see it, so no whining about $9!)

Cheers,
Shaun

A little bluegrass in London

Recently heard at Rosebery Court:

"My slappin' arm's on the mend so my wife's been acting up again."

Got my new tattoo today.  Love it.

Ouch

Todd's in town for the weekend, yay!

We had a good time out in Soho and at Fiction last night, but this morning OH MY GOD.  I had the absolute worst alcohol headache I've ever had.  It hurt so, so bad.  And I don't understand.  All I had from 6pm - 4am was wine then beer then vodka; it's not like I did something silly and mixed with water or anything.

I think I am just out of shape.  Five months away from my alcoholic friends and I'm a wreck.  Russ is coming to visit in April -- I gotta shape up!

Befuddled

This is something I never thought I would say, and I am not even sure what it might mean.

I have started to like Marmite.

As shocked as you are,

Olde London Towne

Fell in love with London all over again tonight...

- a pub from 1546 (imagine, the people drinking there when it opened [during Elizabeth I's reign] could have been talking about this new, exciting continent discovered within their lifetimes called America)

- a church from the 1200s (with a private cocktail party in the basement and a vacant main chamber; we were the only people there to see it [also, it was the first catholic church in England])

- super cool, trendy, modern martini/hookah bar next to Smithfield Market

- (also passing Trade & DTPM, though obviously we didn't go in)

all within 10 minutes of my front door.

Love it.

All my US friends (Niels, Schnookums & McGirr, and Todd, see you in a week, you've all been, but this still applies), come visit soon.  Love it here, but I miss you to bits.

Happy 2006!

I was going to write something witty & clever and personally meaningful to say happy 2006, but I never got to it before the dinners and nights out hit.  So in its place, here are some cute, fluffy kitties.

Cheers,
Shaun

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!  Have a great 2006.......

2005 Has sped by

Now, we need to face 2006

There may be risks involved

We may need to face roadblocks

So stay alert

Share time with friends

Jump over obstacles

With care

And caution

Face challenges

Remember to laugh

Cooperate

Discover

Make new friends

Above all...be ready for adventure

Stick together

And you will be able to go far

Very far.....

Well, not quite that far....

Always take time to smell the flowers

Don't forget to relax and enjoy

And never forget to love those dearest to you

Sir Elton

Heard on CNNi today from a lady outside the UK's most famous gay wedding:

"I'm here to support Elton John.  I feel he has as much right to marry a partner as anyone who's normal."

One wonders - was she referring to his sexuality?

Side note: Asda, Wal-Mart in the UK, is selling same-sex wedding cards.  I wonder how that would go over in Bentonville.

Cheers,
Shaun

Ah, xmas!

Just had a lovely xmas lunch at work... on site WITH wine! That's the way company lunches should be! :)

Tomorrow night is the company xmas dinner, after work, off site, but with champagne & wine from 6:30-11:30 (though I am leaving after the meal to attend another xmas function), totally free, and they're smart enough to make Friday a half day. And I am being paid for all this! Lovely. It's like when you would see Christmas being celebrated in the movies from the 50s & 60s. In fairness the company I am working for is a bit stodgey & dusty... I am curious if it's the same at the firms in Canary Wharf.

Irregardless (sic) it's nice to have a bottle of wine in the middle of the work day. What a brilliant idea!

Cheers,
Shaun

Naomi & Ishcabibble

First of all, thank you to David Bell forever and for always for introducing me to Kiki & Herb.

I saw them in their newest show tonight, "Jesus Wept" a re-do of a post-9/11 show they did in New York back in the day when they were just making the leap from underground cabaret to illegitimate off-Broadway theater.

It was a re-do in title only as it was almost completely new.  They used some of the same songs, but they always did, there was always a carry-over from previous shows.  The show was topical enough without being weighty and the two Kiki-virgins I brought (Natasha & Sean) loved it.

I realized two things; one was that I would never get to experience them in the old cabaret setting I'd come to love them in, and I never exactly realized Kiki's brilliance in how she slowly revealed small pieces of her "life" over several shows until you really felt for her and all she'd been through.  Oh Yesoway!  Oh the child she met at Target (or reasonable facsimile).  Brilliant.

One personal point tonight, I was seated next to one of those ΓΌber-lesbians, you know, the one who can't let go of her girlfriend and who has really bad tattoos.  She was very upset I was cheering loudly for Kiki and at one point told me so and so, too tired of her to deal anymore, I just limply motioned away and said 'You just need to go sit over there then' and kept on giving my all for Kiki.  I know it doesn't sound interesting in this re-telling, but wow, how can you be bitter and angry at KIKI?!  Lesbians will never cease to amaze (as in terrify) me...

It's midnight here in Olde London Towne, so off to bed.  I'm jealous of you SFers who get to see her for NYE (for you few, refer to the subject of this eMail again).

Xo,
Shaun/SWG
